The goal of fertility treatments from a Chinese medicine perspective is not only to get pregnant, but to stay pregnant and to have a healthy baby! Traditional Chinese medicine greatly improves the overall health of both women and men, increasing fertility and the potential for a healthy pregnancy and birth. Using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, we help improve the fertility of couples seeking a natural pregnancy or planning to use assisted reproductive techniques such as IUI and IVF.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can enhance fertility by:

  • Promoting strong ovulation and facilitating the smooth release of a healthy egg
  • Increasing blood flow to the ovaries, improving ovarian function, and nourishing the developing follicles
  • Producing a greater number of follicles
  • Increasing blood flow to the uterus and improving the quality of the uterine lining
  • Regulating FSH & hormone levels
  • Improving sperm count, motility, quality and density in men
  • Preventing uterine contractions post IVF and IUI
  • Lessening side-effects of drugs used in IVF, IUI and other procedures
  • Correcting blocked fallopian tubes
  • Eliminating underlying inflammation that may harm fertility
  • Enhancing response to IVF
  • Relieving stress and relaxing the body
  • Strengthening and regulating the immune system
  • Increasing libido
  • Preventing miscarriage

Many published and ongoing studies show impressive results in treating infertility with acupuncture either on its own, or as a complementary therapy to modern fertility treatments. One of the more recognized studies (Journal of Fertility and Sterility, April 2002) concluded that by adding acupuncture to assisted reproductive technologies, the success rates of IVF increased significantly. The standard in-vitro group had a 26.3% pregnancy rate, while the acupuncture group showed a 42.5% success rate. The study also revealed that while  8% of the women in the acupuncture group miscarried, the rate of miscarriage in the IVF-only group was 20%. In addition, women who received acupuncture also had lower rates of ectopic pregnancies.

Beginning acupuncture treatments sooner rather than later allows for your health to be assessed and improved over a couple of menstrual cycles. Therefore, we encourage patients to come in at least a few months before they hope to conceive.
